I awoke the next morning to find Bobbi next to me naked, albeit hugging the far edge of the bed. I wanted to cry at the thought of all we'd lost. All we could've been. All that was now ruined—tainted by the two men downstairs.

Work was awful. I couldn't even look anyone in the eye. I felt like a worthless loser, which I suppose was how Bobbi wanted me to feel. I guess it goes to show how little we really know people and the depths of their cruelty.

I made it to half-past three when I just couldn't focus another second longer and was about to call it a day when my cell phone rang. It was a guy named Jacob Campbell, one of our original angel investors and a man I once called a friend. He was the last person I wanted to talk to—a super wealthy, handsome, successful businessman who had the world by its balls rather than the other way around. He was also a guy whose calls you don't miss so I drew the last ounce of internal strength I had left and answered.

"Hank, Jacob here."

"Hi, Jacob, it's good to hear from you."

"Yeah, you too. I hear things haven't been too great."

"Oh, they're not bad. Just taking it a day at a time." Of course, my voice cracked as I said it.

"You're a terrible liar."

"I'm sorry, Jacob, I just...it's my burden, you know?"

"Well, maybe I can brighten your day."

"What do you mean?"

"Don't get mad, but your demo has been getting passed around a few important hands."

"What demo?"

"Your new app, you know, the one that tracks news and social media sites to give you a custom feed of what you're interested in."

"How do you know about that? I haven't told anyone. It's not even close to being ready."

"You told someone. And they told someone. And somehow it ended up on my desk packaged in the proverbial bow."

"I'm confused."

"You really don't know what I'm talking about?"

"Shit, I did send it out to this guy I know for debugging. He signed a non-disclosure, though."

"Well, I don't think he honored it. But it doesn't matter, okay? Look, let's get into business again. What you've got here is big, really big."

"Really?"

"These guys, Hank, you'll never guess how they're using your app."

"How?"

"For porn. They're using it to track dozens of porn sites and then update them with new content catered to their specific tastes. It's fucking genius."

"Jesus. I never thought of that."

"Look, brass tax here, Hank, I'm ready to throw down twenty million to get you started. How about we get you out of that slum you're living in?"

"How do you know where—"

"I do my research before I offer that kind of money. I know what happened wasn't your fault, okay? This time get a better fucking lawyer."

"I..." I nearly dropped the phone I was shaking so hard. Tears welled in my eyes. "Jacob, I don't know what to say."

"Say yes!"

"Yes! Thank god, yes!"

"Dinner tomorrow? We'll go over the details?"

And just like that, I was back.
